Photo by Tomas van Houtryve @tomasvh | Since I first moved to Paris in 2006, I must have photographed the Cathedral of Notre-Dame to Paris from dozens of different angles. This image from the window of a friend’s apartment on the the left bank of the Seine is my favorite. It was taken in the spring of 2010 when a storm washed over the streets of the city. The sun suddenly came out, and a rainbow appeared over the cathedral. Never in my darkest nightmares could I imagine that Notre-Dame would collapse in my lifetime. Until this point, it had survived for eight centuries and two world wars. It’s hard to comprehend the loss of patrimony, art and heritage taken by the flames.
